What is a DD Form 1278?
If you want to apply for citizenship in the United States, you will have to fill out a DD Form 1278. This form certifies your overseas assignment and allows you to join your spouse abroad if you are married. This form is also needed if you are going to apply for naturalization in the United States. If you are an alien spouse of a member of the United States military, you must meet the requirements set forth in paragraph (a) of section 319 of the Act. Those requirements include that you must submit an original and properly executed certificate of an overseas assignment, DD Form 1278, in order to file your petition for naturalization.

DD Form 1278 is a document required for military spouses to support their application for naturalization. The form is issued by the military commander and must be filed at the nearest Immigration and Naturalization Service office. DD Form 1278 must be issued at least 90 days before the dependents’ scheduled date of travel to the new duty station.
This document must be submitted by applicants who are being assigned overseas. It certifies that the applicant has concurrent travel orders and that they are authorized to accompany their spouse to a foreign country. To submit this document, the applicant must provide two completed fingerprint cards. Fingerprints can be taken at an overseas USCIS field office or a U.S. military base, or at a USCIS Application Support Center in the United States.
